Trout & Angels Near Finalising Largest Contract In Sports History
Baseball team the Los Angeles Angels and their star center-fielder Mike Trout are close to finalising the largest contract in professional sports history - a 12-year deal worth more than $430 million. Smashing previous records, this deal could keep Trout with the Angels for the rest of his career.
The deal would see Trout receiving an average of close to $36 million per year (the previous record was an average $34.4 million to Zack Greinke with the Arizona Diamondbacks). The total deal is more than 30% larger than the $330 million deal by Bruce Harper this month.
Trout has won two American League MVP awards and finished second four times and is widely regarded as one of the best players of his generation. According to ESPN statistics, in 1,065 games, he has slashed .307/.416/.573 with 240 home runs, 648 RBIs, 793 runs and 189 stolen bases. No player in history has put up more wins above replacement through his age-26 season than Trout's 64.3.
The Angels will void the final two seasons of his six-year, $144.5 million deal and replace them with the new 12-year deal through the 2030 season.
