Why The Grammys Were Fucked Up This Year
The 2019 Grammys were mired in controversy from the get-go, with artists like Drake, Kendrick Lamar and Ariana Grande refusing to perform. When the awards went down yesterday, people were pretty mad about a few key elements, so we're going to recap why we weren't fans of the annual music awards.
Cardi B winning 'Best Rap Album'
Although Cardi had a HUGE year with her album 'Invasion of Privacy' and has made history by becoming the first solo female rapper to win the award, fans are upset that the Grammy's specifically invited Mac Miller's family on the pretence that they would be receiving the award for Millers's 'Swimming' which was widely regarded as a game-changing album in not just rap, but all of music. Instead, the award was given to somebody else.
Ex-girlfriend Ariana Grande posted a series of since-deleted Tweets about the snub: “literal bullshit...bullshit...fuck...trash."
Album of the Year
The prestigious 'Album of the Year' title went to Kasey Musgraves' 'Golden Hour', which sent fans into chaos. The favourite to win had been Kendrick Lamar's 'Black Panther', especially after Musgraves had already picked up the 'Best Country Album' title. 'King's Dead' from the 'Black Panther' album did pick up 'Best Rap Performance', but this was tied, leading fans to be even more frustrated.
This is America
Childish Gambino's political track 'This is America' cleaned up with 'Song of the Year' and more, however, some hip-hop fans aren't convinced on the process of choosing the winners. The main question asked online was: "was this song big enough to win the number of awards it did?"
Awards season is always a controversial time as the appreciation of all art is completely subjective. It's worth noting also that this was the lowest year of viewings for the Grammys.
